May 2018 Fitness Summary

We are approaching the end of June and I am quite late with my fitness review for the month of May. Well, as they say, it’s better late than never, so I decided to remember what happened in previous month and record it in this post. These are some highlights from the month of May:

  1. Training for triathlon;
  2. Olympic distance triathlon in Taurage.

As always, let’s firstly look at summary of the month in numbers:

I am pretty happy with the numbers, in general. I started training more seriously in April and during May I slowly increased the amount spent doing sports. 26 hours means that I spent almost an hour a day in average actively. Biggest amount of time was spent in my running shoes, followed by time spent on the saddle of my bike. This makes sense, as I am preparing for a marathon this autumn and am planning to participate in triathlon events each month until September. I also upped the amounts of running and cycling in one go and these are some memorable facts:

  • Longest run during May – 17km
  • Longest bike ride during May – 50km

Olympic triathlon in Taurage

The most notable event during May was participation on the 2nd stage of Lithuanian triathlon cup in Taurage. It was an Olympic distance triathlon which consists of 1,5km swim, followed by 40km ride, followed by 10km run. This was a proper triathlon with openwater swim and I had an opportunity to remember what it means to swim together with other people. I received quite a few bumps and I guess I gave a few as well, there were instances when my goggles were full of water. You get pushed around a lot and need to fight for position when the start is given. But that’s part of the fun and I am enjoying that I can compete in this tough sport! This is how the start looked like:

This is how it went for me:

  • Swim: 0:32:23 (69th out of 94 participants);
  • Transition1: 0:02:19;
  • Bike: 01:15:45 (72nd);
  • Transition2: 0:01:19;
  • Run: 0:50:41 (64th);
  • Total time: 02:42:27 (70th out of 94 participants, 66th out of 86 men)

I am glad to say that this was my personal record for the Olympic distance triathlon! One may say that the result is not impressive, as I finished in bottom 25% of the field but I am happy nevertheless. Everybody has different goals and my goal is to improve my personal results without suffering any injuries. I also set a goal for myself this year to finish in top 50% of the field in the final classification of Lithuanian Triathlon Cup. I am still determined to reach this goal by participating in more events and constant training.

Going Forward

Looking into upcoming months, I am planning to continue training for next triathlon events. It’s nice to track my progress and see what my weakest sides in this sport are. Currently, it’s cycling which also takes the biggest part of time in triathlon. So I will try to improve in this discipline and it should help to improve my overall results in triathlon.

P.S. I actually already completed another triathlon event during June but this is for my next monthly summary so stay tuned!

Thanks for reading and feel free to leave any comments below! 🙂

  1. Congrats on your competition results and good luck on meeting your goals to finish in the top 50% next time. I like your perspective on being happy with improving your results with no injuries. You’re putting in some serious time training BI, and so I hope it pays off. I did a 5k in June, and I was hurting afterward! So, I’m totally out of shape, to say the least. I can’t imagine doing half the things you’re doing to get ready for the triathlon.

    1. Hi DP,
      Thanks for the nice words! It all comes with time. I remember training for my first 5k back in 2014. I consistently trained for a month before I attempted my first 5k, so I don’t think that it’s that easy, you just need to be patient 🙂
